SpringoCompany Springo has announced they are working on an iPad application of their visual navigation search engine website and browser plug-in that will provide iPad users with a unique browsing experience that “augments traditional searches”.

The technology behind the visual navigation is known as “internet direct navigation” and is best described as a portal of other web sites, visually similar to the Safari “Top Sites” home page feature or Firefox plug-ins such as “Speed Dial”. While the official iPad app will more than likely be a redesigned UI to best suit the device’s multi touch and display, the website provides rows of sites with app sized icons providing suggestions based on your most visited sites as well as lists of recommendations such as “News”, “Music”, “Sports”, etc.

The developers of the app do not claim the technology will replace traditional search services such as Google, but says the visual search tool will act as a complimentary tool to provide visual results for traditional search queries.

What makes the Springo technology different from Google? Developer Refuah explains, “We have no plans to give Webmasters the power through back links, similar to Google,” Refuah says. “This is a problem because they influence ranking results. We will continue to sort the Web sites based on traffic volume and popularity of users.”

Until the official iPad app is released, owners of Apple’s new device can check out the functionality of Springo by making it their homepage in the Safari.app.
