Apple has finally pulled back the curtains on its new iPad, although confusion remains over precisely what to actually call it. Apple is sticking with the `new iPad` moniker but most are calling it the iPad 3 in order to differentiate it from the first and second generations of this popular tablet range.

The iPad 3 makes many impressive technological leaps forward and few are in doubt that it is once more going to be considered as the world`s best tablet. Its battle for supremacy begins with the impressive Retina Display, which at 2048×1536 resolution is twice that of the previous two iPads and considerably higher than every other tablet available to date.

The Retina Display of the iPad 3 still sticks to the same 9.7 inch area as its predecessors, but with all of that extra detail packed in it becomes impossible to differentiate between individual pixels using the naked eye. The downside is that applications have become much larger as a result of all the extra detail that is required, so the 16GB edition of the iPad 3 is going to be a lot more limited than its lower-resolution siblings.

Apple has improved the processing might of the iPad 3 thanks to the inclusion of the new A5X processor. It still has two physical cores like that of the iPad 2 but Apple is claiming that it can achieve quad core graphical fidelity, which is something that will doubtlessly be debated by tech lovers.

In order to address complaints about the iPad 2`s bog standard camera, the iPad 3 features a new iSight five megapixel snapper which is a definite step in the right direction. Full HD 1080p video capture is possible and this footage looks great on the new high-res Retina Display. The iPad range has always been a favourite of creative, arty types and now its photographic abilities are finally being brought up to scratch.

The iPad 3 is the first of Apple`s tablets to feature 4G network connectivity. While previous generations have had the option of 3G available, this represents a significant leap when it comes to mobile data speeds. Of course 4G is not available in every country and so its relevance will depend on your location. You can still pick a Wi-Fi only iteration of the iPad 3 if 4G connectivity is not central to your needs. Onboard storage ranging from 16GB to 64GB is also in tact from previous generations, although as mentioned earlier it is likely that the larger app sizes will make the higher capacity models more popular this time around.

The Apple iPad 3, or the new iPad, is already selling out across the globe, with sales figures sure to dominate popular smartphones like the Galaxy S2 white from Samsung. The positive and negative aspects of the tablet are hardly likely to influence serious Apple fans, because the cult surrounding the iPad itself is arguably more important.

Apple iPad and HP SlateWith all of the attention and fanfare surrounding the launch of the Apple iPad, it’s not much of a surprise that Apple loyalists are quickly shooting down the prospect of another company producing a tablet device that can compete. However, that hasn’t stopped PC purists from touting the HP Slate as the superior tablet device. As I attempt to write this article from an unbiased point of view, it quickly becomes difficult as the iPad’s specs blow the HP Slate’s specs out of the water.

One thing that fans of the HP Slate always point to is the fact that it runs Windows 7, a full desktop operating system, in comparison to the iPad which runs a version of the iPhone OS. While one might argue that there are many apps that can be used and processes that can be performed on Windows 7 and not on iPhone OS on the iPad, I’m quickly to point out that the majority of them wouldn’t be possible on the Slate simply due to the processor and RAM limitations. In other words, if you think you are going to run a professional application such as the Adobe Master Collection smoothly on the HP Slate, think again.

Another talking point is the weight of the device. iPad was criticized for being a little on the heavy side, and while the HP Slate is a little bit lighter, it certainly doesn’t win the grade in design being a little but thicker.

Comparing the battery life when comparing two mobile devices is obviously a big deal and for many people can the deal breaker when trying to choose between the two. Apple’s iPad is the clear winner in this regard with reviewers claiming the battery lasted much longer than Apple had even claimed while running continuous video playback. This is where Windows 7 on the HP Slate starts to seem like more of hindrance than anything else as it results in extremely poor battery life that is half that of its biggest competitor, the iPad.

Okay, we all know that you are going to end up deciding for yourself when it comes to whether or not to buy Apple’s iPad or the HP Slate. However, maybe a quick price comparison will put things into perspective for you. The iPad 16GB model comes in at $499, while the base 32GB HP Slate model comes in at $549. Keep in mind, you will need much of that space reserved for the Windows 7 OS itself (I’d say around 15 GB to be safe).
