Google`s Android operating system is making a surprising resurgence in the tablet market, leaving current kings Apple looking a little less dominant, according to BBC News.

The iPad and the iPad 2 have held sway over the tablet market which they have essentially helped created in its current form, but now the 68 per cent share of sales which Apple enjoyed in previous quarters dropped to 58 per cent in the final three months of 2011.

Android, on the other hand, was on the rise, with sales of tablets based on the operating system accounting for 39 per cent of sales in this sector. Meanwhile Microsoft, which does not have a dedicated tablet operating system on the market, made up just 1.5 per cent of units sold in Q4 2011.

The iPad range is still easily the most popular tablet family from a single manufacture as more than 15.4 million were sold from October 2011 to the end of the year. However, 10.5 million Android tablets were shifted over the same period, which suggests that Google could well be catching up in terms of general popularity.

The total tablet sales figures for 2011 came to almost 67 million across the world. This is a dramatic increase over the 18.6 million which were bought in 2010, the year of the first iPad`s launch.

The most obvious failures in 2011 were Research in Motion (RIM) and HP. HP gave up on its WebOS-based TouchPad tablet in the middle of the year, selling it at a seriously discounted price point after it had failed to find a niche in the market amongst the iPad and Android alternatives. Meanwhile the BlackBerry Playbook was RIM`s attempt to get its own piece of the pie, although it too has been discounted in an attempt to improve sales.

What will be most interesting in 2012 is the battle between Apple and Amazon, whose Kindle Fire tablet arrived at the tail end of 2011 and the impact of which has yet to be truly examined. The Kindle Fire is about half the price of the basic iPad 2 and runs a heavily modified version of Android 2.3, so the two are not exactly direct competitors. But in the tablet market, anything goes and Apple will be worried about slipping even more market share as Amazon flexes its muscles.

Of course this could all change once the iPad 3 hits shelves, because Apple is thought to have big plans up its sleeve. The most important asset of the iPad 3 will doubtlessly be its display, because a resolution hike is anticipated to bring it in line with Android-based rivals. A quad core A6 processor and much improved onboard cameras are also on the cards according to rumors, which might make iPad 3 devices the most popular free gifts for anyone picking up a new mobile phone contract in 2012.

Apple iPad 2 is on the wayThe latest news about the expected and upcoming iPad 3 from Apple is that it would have a full launch in March. Like the prior versions, as well as the iPhone 4 and 4S, it is supposed to contain a Retina display, although the resolution is rumored to be higher. With refurbished IPad models and previous releases beginning to drop in price, the IPad 3 is slated to have a number of improvements over its two predecessors.

With all of the major wireless providers now offering 4G connectivity, it is being said that the iPad 3 will be able to connect not only to Wi-Fi, but also to LTE networks (long term evolution). This will give the company’s flagship tablet the ability to transmit data faster than the previous versions. The product could also be built with a quad-core processor that would enable users to move more quickly between applications.

Another of the large talk surrounding the 3 is that LG and Samsung will be the suppliers of the upcoming Apple tablet’s display, making for great movie and video watching. Apple is said to have considered Sharp as a supplier but they “failed to pass Apple’s approval process for mass production,” according to Electronic Times Internet News. There is an expectation that the iPad 3 will be equipped with LCD panels made by both LG and Samsung that would have a screen resolution of 2048 by 1536.

Interestingly, the iPad 3 may also contain the Siri voice feature that the iPhone 4S enjoys. This is currently being incorporated into the iOS 5.1 beta version and may end up as a regular feature on the iPad 3 when it is released in March of this year. It is not compatible with the iPad 2 but very well may be an exciting addition to the 3 as developers continue to work on the software updates.

The battery life for the rumored Apple release is also expected to be a major upgrade over previous releases. This is especially important for individuals who use their tablet for work or educational purposes, as some battery issues have become small obstacles for Apple with past releases like the IPhone 4S. An improved camera for video chatting and face time is also expected to round out the major upgrades for the rumored IPad 3, among other features.

Like the iPhone 4S, the iPad 3 is likely to contain the A5 chip included in the models. The iPad 2 is already an incredible device and performing well, but as time moves on the necessity to upgrade the line was inevitable. Expect a strong reaction to the impending news of a launch for Apple’s newest expected device in 2012.
